Chhalaang Movie Review

Hansal Mehta in his 2.0 avatar often makes critical films like SHAHID [2013], CITY LIGHTS [2014], ALIGARH [2015], OMERTA [2018], etc. He tried a black joke in the middle of SIMRAN [2017] but it was rude. His latest work, the popular web series, SCAM 1992, was also a no-brainer. But now, Hansal Mehta is moving to a place with a bright heart and CHHALAANG. It features him with his favorite actor Rajkummar Rao. Currently, produced by Luv Ranjan and Nushrratt Bharucha, who are familiar with her films, she is portrayed as a leading woman. The trailer promises entertainment and a certain amount of excitement. Does Hansal Mehta succeed in making this type of CHHALAANG? Or fail to deliver? Let's analyze.

CHHALAANG is the story of a sports coach who is not interested in finding purpose in life. Mahinder Hooda aka Montu (Rajkummar Rao) is a PTI (Physical Training Instructor) at Sir Chotu Ram School in Jhajjar, Haryana. During his teenage years, he participated in cricket tournaments and athletics at the same school. But he quit sports after not joining the government team. Similarly, he left the legal profession when he realized that he would have to read a lot of heavy literature. It was then that his father (Satish Kaushik) praised his name to the school principal Ushal Gehlot (Ila Arun). So he hired her. Montu is not very serious about doing his job as he believes that sports will not help students. He also does other chores at school, one of which is to beat the couple roaming the park. At the same time, he ended up abusing a middle-aged couple (Rajeev Gupta and Suparna Marwah). The next day, Neelima aka Neelu (Nushrratt Bharuccha) joins the school as a computer teacher. Montu is attracted to her and that's when Neelu reveals to her that the middle-aged couple were her parents! He also accused her of being a good police officer. Montu recognizes his mistake. Gradually, both Montu and Neelu get closer. Montu wants to take the relationship to the next level. But before that can happen, myths and legends change. Inder Mohan Singh (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub), a certified sports coach, joins the school as a PTI. Montu has been demoted to the position of PTI assistant even though his salary remains the same. Montu is obviously protesting but the principal is not paying attention. Inder arrives and begins to offer hard training to students. He is also friendly with Neelu, and continues to be angry with Montu. Singh realizes that Montu is jealous and teases him. Montu angrily attacks Singh. The principal tells Montu to apologize to Singh. He refuses at first and asks her to hold a contest between the two school teams. One team will be trained by Singh and the other will be trained by Montu. In addition, Singh will have the opportunity to select the best students. Montu asks for the goal that if his team loses, he will give up and expect the opposite with Singh. Singh shakes his head. The principal, in turn, agrees and selects three sports in the tournament - basketball, the 400-meter passing race, and kabaddi. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Luv Ranjan's story is predicted and nothing new. However, it makes the important point that sports are an important component of a child's full developmental cycle. Luv Ranjan, Aseem Arora, and Zeishan Quadri's screenplay are better. Authors like to narrate sometimes very interesting stories that keep the interest going. The first part is mostly well written, especially before Montu and Singh became big rivals. This is the point at which interest should have been maintained and writers have succeeded in doing so. The characters are also very well written and fleshy. In the background intervals, however, the script should have been solid. The conversations of Luv Ranjan, Aseem Arora, and Zeishan Quadri are sharp and humorous.

Hansal Mehta's direction is honorable. A film of this nature is by no means his castle but he is able to pass with flying colors. He had simple hearts and times for games and elan. However, the biggest problem with the film is its release time. It should have been released 1 ½ or two years ago, before the release of CHHICHHORE [2019]. That film had the same idea of a poor, under-dog team that trained hard to use compositions and gave a hard fight to a strong group of self-respect and dignity. Not only that, the two games shown at CHHALAANG are also similar to the star of Sushant Singh Rajput! Also, the climax is almost identical to PANGA [2020]. To give credit where it should, the producers try their best to use the rustic flavor of the film and other means to ensure that their film does not remind CHHICHHORE viewers.

CHHALAANG starts with a common note even though the opening credits are cleverly made and the setting of Haryanvi sets the mood. The film takes interest when Montu abuses Neelu's parents and Neelu teaches him a lesson the next day. From here on out, the film captures the interest well. The film gets better as Singh enters and gives Montu a tough competition both professionally and personally. The break point is amazing. The second part, too, has its share of interesting scenes especially the tricks used by Man to promote his party and Neelu's father and Montu using the 'saam-daam-dand-bed' strategy for parents. The scenes of the game sting with nails and are very well organized. Montu’s climax speech when he talks about being the parents of Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli etc. is very good and he would have been greeted with applause and whistles if the movie had taken him out of the movies.

Rajkummar Rao presents the most enjoyable performance as usual. One can say that he repeats but he observes and one sees that he has added good touches and nuances to his role. Nushrratt Bharuccha looks kind and does a good job. You also get a good Haryanvi dictionary. However, his character does not do much to the whole system of things. Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub is as good as the so-called opponent. His presentation of the talks is especially commendable. However, his character should have improved. Saurabh Shukla is adorable and adds fun to the drama. Satish Kaushik is as honest as usual. Ila Arun deserves this part. However, the makers had to re-emphasize how her character used to tell Montu to help the school earn more money by renting the school grounds as a wedding venue. Jatin Sarna (Dimpy) is funny and one wishes she had more screen time. Baljinder Kaur (Montu's mother) gets a limited rating. Naaman Jain (Bablu) has interesting scenes in the first part and is active. Garima Kaur (Pinky) is an important part of the last 30 minutes of the film and is very beautiful. Rajeev Gupta and Suparna Marwah are not a good thing.

Music does not work without 'Le Chhalaang'. It feels like a song and matches the mood of the movie in the second season. 'Teri Choriyaan' is okay. ‘Care Ni Karda’ appears just before the end of the installation while ‘Deedar De’ is absent. Hitesh Sonik's background rating is impressive.

The movie Eeshit Narain (Chris Reed's sports cinematography) is amazing. Both lenses work well in sequence to magnify several scenes. Shashank Tere's production design is authentic. The same goes for the outfits of Aki Narula and Arun J Chauhan. Samidha Wangnoo's costume from Nushrratt Bharuccha's 'Care Ni Karda' song is adorable. Harpal Singh's action is right. The planning of Akiv Ali and Chetan M Solanki is not easy. Lastly, special talk should also go to the role of Vicky Sidana in finding the best child actors, as well as Rob Miller for her active athletic direction.

All in all, CHHALAANG is a simple, reliable and well-executed entertainer that keeps viewers engaged from start to finish. Playing, writing and well-organized scenes are like blossoming a cake. Recommended!
